I love avocados, but I hate when I need one and they aren’t ripe! It seems like avocados at the store are either hard as a rock or basically rotten. So if you need one for dinner, you are probably out of luck unless you meal planned a week ahead. For those of use who can’t think that far in advance, I have a great tip on how to ripen an avocado in 1-2 days. All you need is a banana, a brown bag and a little time.
After you unpack your groceries from the store, grab a small brown paper bag. Remove the small stem on top of the avocado. Place the avocados inside the bag along with a banana. The browner the banana, the faster your avocado will ripen. But don’t use an overly ripe/almost rotten banana that’s just gross! I’m not a scientist but I imagine the banana must emit a gas that helps to ripen the avocado. If anyone knows exactly how this process works I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
Roll the bag closed tight and let it sit on the counter for 1-2 days, until the avocados are ripe.
You will know that the avocados are ripe if when you press on the skin it feels slightly soft. If the avocado still feels hard to the touch, then let it ripen in the bag for another day.
A ripe avocado will be a nice yellow/green color, no brown spots.
Now you can make guacamole with those yummy avocados! My favorite recipe is super simple. Just smash two avocados, with one medium size clove of garlic. Add a small squeeze of lime and a large sprinkle of salt! Mix for the perfect guacamole.
Add the pit of the avocado to the bowl of guacamole to keep it from turning brown. Now you can take your time making the tacos!
Check out these fun avocado tools! I have an avocado saver for when I only need to use half! I love it!
So with only about a days worth of planning ahead and a banana, you can have ripe avocados for dinner! Tacos anyone!
