Ask kids if they want a snack after playing sports and you will get an automatic YES! Children have come to expect and look forward to this all important snack that is usually provided after playing sports. A lot of energy is expended when kids play sports and snacks help them to refuel! Since their little tummies are just begging for something to eat, we as parents need to make sure our children get healthy snacks that will help nourish their bodies. Healthy snacks will help kids play harder and last longer. Whether you are packing a snack for your own child or bringing snacks to the whole team, this list provides some easy options.
Best Snack Choices
Fruit is a great snack for kids after they have played sports and is my number one choice. Fruit contains natural sugars and has a high water content making it great for rehydration. Watermelon wedges, small oranges, and apple slices are easy for kids to eat as they cool down. My favorite fruit is grapes and my kids love to eat them frozen. What an awesome snack to eat on a hot day after running around.
Go Go Squeez apple sauce pouches are my top choice for the busy mom who doesn’t have time to cut up and wash fruit. I love to keep several different flavors in my fridge ready to go at all times. They are a cinch to throw in the cooler and super easy for the kids to eat after they have finished playing.
-Frozen Yogurt Tubes
Yogurt is a great source of protein which helps fuel kids muscles. Freezing the yogurt tubes helps to ensure the yogurt stays cold and won’t spoil. Plus, the push up part of these frozen tubes makes eating them more fun! Just make sure you buy a brand that is low in sugar and artificial ingredients. If you want to make your own, just use these awesome push up moulds. I always keep a few in my freezer for the boys.
My kids love granola bars and they are easy for kids to eat out on the field. I prefer to buy the ones with whole grains, nuts, and seeds and avoid the ones that contain candy. But remember some kids can’t have nuts so be careful.
-Peanut Butter Crackers
Peanut butter crackers are a crunchy snack that kids can easily enjoy after playing sports. You can buy them in individual pre-portioned bags that will be easy to pass out to the entire team. I like to buy the organic brand, Late July, so I know I am giving my kids crackers made from wheat flour and real peanut butter.
Popcorn is a whole grain that most kids love to eat, so they will enjoy receiving this snack after a game. Like the crackers, you can buy individual bags to pass out. My kids favorite brand is Angie’s BoomChickAPop! Yummy!
String cheese is a fun snack for children to eat after they have finished playing. My son loves to peel the cheese one tiny piece at a time. Cheese is another good source of protein and these individually wrapped sticks are easy for parents to bring to events.
-Box of Raisins
Individual boxes of raisins are a good choice to pack if you don’t like carrying a big bag to your child’s game. The boxes are small and don’t need to be refrigerated. Raisins are naturally sweet so kids love to eat them. Since raisins are just dried grapes they are healthy too!
I hope this list has helped you find some easy and healthy snacks for your child who likes to play sports! Leave a comment and let me know what your favorite sports snack is.
