This year I am planning a small July 4th party. I have been trying to create the perfect table setting from the utensils to the centerpiece. I don’t usually host many parties, but when I do, I like things to be simple and festive. I like easy decor and cute DIY projects. I’m not much of a crafter (and have plenty of Pinterest fails under my belt), but if a project is easy with only a few steps then I can usually manage:) For my party this year, I made these patriotic utensil holders that will also act as a place setting & name card for my July 4th table decor. They were easy to make using only a paper bag and some Washi tape.
A few years ago, I discovered this idea on Pinterest from the blog Making Home Base. I have had this craft pinned for awhile, but never had the opportunity to try it out. So when all of a sudden I was throwing a small July 4th party, I knew I had to finally give this DIY utensil holder a try. The best thing about this idea is that it can be adapted to any party/BBQ/event you are planning. Just change the design on the Washi tape and Voila a totally different look!
For my July 4th party utensil holders, I purchased white paper lunch bags, American Flag napkins, and a roll of Patriotic Washi Tape. Everything is available on Amazon, which is nice because you won’t have to run all over town looking for the right products.
Make sure you start with the folded part of the white paper bag facing up. Seems obvious, but hey this is a craft for the non-crafty. Simple and Easy it is!
Next unroll the Washi tape in a straight line along the edge of each side of the bag. Make sure you leave some of the tape overhanging the edges, so that you can fold it over to the other side. This will create a smooth edge and a more finished look.
Once you have applied and folded all the tape, then you will have a nice secure pocket on the front of the paper bag.
Now just fold your American Flag Napkin in half and insert into the pocket. Next, place the plastic utensils in the pocket on top of the napkin. Now your finished! Isn’t that simple and easy? I told you so:)
I also decided to write names on my paper bags, so that I could use them as a seating card along with a place setting on the table. Not only is this DIY craft easy and functional, it is also super cute. It adds a nice simple patriotic decor to your party.
This idea would also work great if you were hosting a large party or school function. The utensil holders could easily be made ahead of time, and then placed in a large stack on the buffet table right next to the paper plates.
I hope you have fun with this idea. It’s perfect for those of use who like simple decor at our parties. And for those of us who have a brown thumb when it comes to big craft projects!
And, if you need a simple cake for your July 4th Party, then check out my blog post on how I made a Red, White, and Blue M&M cake. It turned out beautifully and was so easy the kids helped me decorate!
Happy Fourth of July!!
