It’s a new year and I have been clearing the clutter from our home. Whenever I clean and organize a space, I love to make piles i.e. things to donate, things to throw away, things to repurpose. While tackling my boys rooms, I realized they had too much stuff. Awesome things were become lost in their cluttered closets. So I removed lots of games, books, and activities from their rooms and used them to create a family night cabinet. Now, whenever I declare a family night in our house, the boys will know just where to look to find a fun activity!
Why you need a Family Night Cabinet
When your children are small, its easy to spend lots of time playing wth them. I definitely remember the “mommy will you play with me” phase! Sitting down on the floor to play with action figures, race cars, and lego men was a mild form of torture for me (#momtruth), but I did it with a smile because I love my boys. But man oh man, I wish I had had a family night cabinet back then.
This cabinet should be filled with games, toys, and activities that the whole family can enjoy. I could have answered the question “Mommy play toys?” with a simple “yes honey go pick something from our family cabinet.” Children just want to enjoy our presence, they won’t really care about what is being played. Why is hind sight always 20/20?
Now if you have older children, a family night cabinet is still an awesome idea. In my house, we aim to have a family fun night at least once a week. Now this doesn’t mean, I don’t spend quality time with my boys everyday because I do. Family fun night is just a way for us to spend time together enjoying an activity that isn’t done on a regular basis.
We love pizza and a movie night, but since receiving Dinkee Linkee for Kids as a Christmas gift, game night is running a close second.
When creating our family night cabinet, I made sure to exclude any games that weren’t fun for my entire family. Of course, this is totally a matter of preference and opinion, but no one should have to be bored or tortured on family FUN night, right?
What to include in a Family Night Cabinet
Today, I am sharing the activities my family keeps in our family night cabinet. I feel like variety is the spice of life, so I tried to included several different options.
Board Games – Our favorites include Sorry, Monopoly, and Life.
Card Games – We love Uno, Old Maid, and Go Fish.
Activities – Puzzles & Spot It (A must play! It is so much fun and great for stimulating the brain!)
Books – I Spy, Guinness World Records, & Shel Silverstein (books that encourage thinking or discussion)
Movies – I keep our DVDs organized in these clear boxes. They don’t take up much space and I can toss all the cases!
Coloring books and other arts and crafts could be a fun addition to the cabinet, but my boys aren’t big fans so I left them out.
If you don’t have a cabinet to devote to family night, then try to find a special shelf in the close. Another option would be to create a family night basket which could easily be kept in the living room or hidden under a bed.
Family fun night is such a great way to spend quality time with your kids.
Weather you are clearing out the clutter or not, creating a family night cabinet can make life a little more organized!
