My kids are away at camp today! No not sleep away camp, but a day camp where they play golf and tennis all day. They love camp days over the Summer. A chance to play outside, hang with friends, and have fun. I love camp days too! When the boys are away, I get a small break from being the entertainer, and get to focus on my mom to do list!
My kids aren’t in camp all Summer long. I actually enjoy when they are home from school and look forward to spending quality time with them. The only problem, with the kids being home, is that I never get anything accomplished!
Yes the laundry gets washed. And yes, I still make it to the grocery store. But sometimes, I feel like that is all that gets done around here over the Summer. And I’m ok with that for the most part. Summer is about relaxing and family fun, so I usually take my to do list and toss it out the window! Even though really that list is haunting my dreams.
So when camp day rolls around, and the kids are away for the day, I get excited that I can actually tackle some projects on my list. (I’d like to mention that my mental to do list is a mile long and will probably never get fully accomplished! Please tell me I’m not the only one with a never ending list!)
I have every intention to clean out the garage, organize the boys closets, and write 5 blog posts.
I have plans to run to Home Depot for a new garbage can, Target for black out curtains, and the mall for more makeup.
My productive day hasn’t turned out as I planned! Nothing is getting done!
Instead, I meet a friend at Oceana, my favorite coffee shop, to exchange stories from our Summer Vacations. Then, I get a much needed haircut!
Finally, I make it to the Target parking lot, but spend 30 minutes in the car talking to my sister on the phone, while eating Chick-fil-A for lunch. Then, I quickly check my email and scroll through Instagram just to make sure I haven’t missed something “important” throughout the day.
I realize how late it is already, and rush inside the store to get some shopping done, before I need to pick up the boys from camp. I head for the curtain aisle, but end up stopping 3 times to look at wrapping paper, shoes, and closet organizers, none of which I need and none of which are on my list!
When I finally make it the correct department, I realize they don’t even have white black out curtains at Target! Ugh! So I pick up a few more things off my list and head to check out, realizing I need to hurry up and get the kids.
While I’m driving in the car, I think to myself “Wow! I have gotten nothing accomplished today!”
So much for being productive while the kids were away.
But actually, maybe I was productive! Maybe I didn’t get anything done on my to do list, but my busy day of running around was just what this mom needed. I needed social interaction, self pampering, and mindless shopping! I needed to destress, and this day was perfect for my mental health!
As moms, we all have days where we intend to get so much done. And I’m pretty sure, we have all had days like mine where nothing actually gets checked off the list. But in the end, what ever we actually accomplished was exactly what we needed.
This is mom life, you learn to go with the flow, no matter how many plans you make:)
Plus, tomorrow is always another day! And that’s what Amazon is for, right? To order everything we didn’t get at the store!
